Are you trying to ping by name or numerical IP? If these are local
machines (which presumably won't DNS properly) and you try and ping
by name without having them in your /etc/hosts file you would get the
behavior you report as it waits for DNS to time out.
If you're pinging them by (numerical) IP address and still failing,
then perhaps your networking is not quite right, but it would be in
some subtle way since you say internet works, perhaps your subnet is
not set properly, or, if you have a router in the path, it is not set
up correctly?
