In the backend configuration (mythtv-setup), there is an option
somewhere to only open the recorder "on demand", so that if no
recordings/liveTV are in progress, the card may be opened by other
programs (like azap).

kill is fine. Instead of "shutdown", why not just restart mythbackend?
