you'll want to use VGA or Component (with a /very/ high quality cable or 
some sort of amplification).  Doing so, you'll get a picture (perhaps 
with /a lot/ of noise).  However, using DVI, you won't even get a 
picture.  :)

Of course, if you took the SDI signal from the DVI output and ran it 
over your own custom-built 500-ft long coaxial lines, you may in fact 
get an image with no noticeable quality degradation even over that 
distance.  Unfortunately, a 500-ft DVI cable won't work, though.

But, your point is /definitely/ valid.  For the lengths of runs in a 
common installation, there's no real difference.
