Two quick questions:

First: When you ran mythfrontend, did you get a screen asking for the  
backend's IP and such? If so, try the next step.

Second: Is networking enabled on the MySQL server on the backend?  
KnoppMyth has MySQL networking disabled by default, so it's entirely  
possible that's a default setting of MySQL period. Check your your  
MySQL conf file, see what it says.
