[mythtv-users] I Strayed! Now I want to come back, but with caveats

Allan Wilson:

1. I think there is an option in the myth settings section that lets you
adjust the overscan. With TV's there will always be a little of this I think
from what I read b/c they are used to do that. You have to use software to
scale it back. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Well, I'd really like to see the desktop of the computer be full screen, and
myth be the same size as the desktop. I have a wireless keyboard & mouse,
and would like to be able to browse the internet, etc. outside of myth.
Problem was, whenever I tried to use anything other than pixel for pixel,
it'd jump all over the place. NVidia's drivers in windows take care of all
this automatically, and I have no idea where to even start in linux :-(

2. This works great for me, tell us exactly isn't working. Sometimes I do
have problems with audio tracks but there is fixes for this.

With the dvd ripping it was always just that the "transcoding daemon"
wouldn't ever start. Like I said, I didn't spend too much time with this, so
it is probably just something retarded. Not nearly as big a deal to me as
(1).

3. I want to use it for iTunes playback also I have read where they are
working on this but I haven't seen anything recently.

Has anyone heard anything? This seems like it would be a big deal to me... I
could store my music library on my server (aka myth box), share it via
samba, everyone in the house could point their iTunes libraries to that
shared folder, creating their playlists, then sharing them back...

Mike:

That is overscan. All TV's (digital and analog) are built to use overscan
(even high-def TV's). So, you have a choice between any two of 1:1 pixel
mapping, full resolution, and no overscan. You can't have all three. The
other option is to buy a monitor (not a TV) that does /not/ have overscan.
Although, usually, computer monitors have slightly different aspect
ratio's--such as 1920x1200--so you would get a small amount of letterboxing.
And, from a cost perspective, this may not be ideal.

Heh, yeah my original plan called for a projector, but I got a good deal on
this TV, and I wasn't too keen on having to turn out the lights to watch TV.
Anyway, monitor isn't an option. I think what confuses me is how good the TV
looks running a windows desktop (via adjustment in the NVidia drivers) and
why I had so much trouble getting it to work right under linux. I think I
would PAY someone to just come make it work (explaining to me exactly what
the hell i was doing wrong).

Mache:

I think I'll probably go the route of ripping them on my windows desktop and
just moving them to the myth box if I can't get the ripper inside myth to
work the way I want.

Thanks for all the responses so far!

Once upon a time, I built and ran a mythTV box. I loved & hated myth, mostly
for what amounted to things that I simply didn't understand. Outlined below
are the main concerns I have with returning to myth:

1. Firewire recordings over the DCT6200: They regularly would crash the
frontend. I believe it had something to do with the whole sync byte being
messed up at the beginning of the transport stream, but I could never figure
out a way to automate fixing it.

2. Resolutions problems with my HDTV. I have a Philips 50" Ambilight PDP
with a native resolution of 720p. And I had one HELL of a time getting X to
use the right resolution, it always ran over the edges! I think there may
have been some sort of overscanning issue, or perhaps I just wasn't holding
my tongue right while working on it. Either way I could use some serious
help here, since getting X's resolution right is key to getting things to
look properly.

3. DVD ripping. I didn't get real far with this...and I didn't spend *that*
much time with it either. I'd basicly like to rip dvd's, keeping the primary
movie (throw away extras, etc) and the surround sound track. I don't even
care about compressing them, I can get plenty of HD space. For whatever
reason, however, I just never got this working.

This works great for me, tell us exactly isn't working. Sometimes I do have

4. MythMusic. It is...well just plain klunky. What I did in the past was to
have a second computer hooked up running windows & itunes...just for music.
If I could get myth to play shared iTunes playlists from my network...that
would be AMAZING. Is this possible? I don't want myth to share its
library...i want it to read OTHER computer's shared itunes libraries.

I want to use it for iTunes playback also I have read where they are working

I'm sitting on a great computer, with tons of HD space, 2 DCT-6200's, and a
50" plasma...somebody PLEASE help me put this stuff together!

Thanks!
