I use Gentoo with exactly the same dependency versions
and I'm using the latest stable version of transcode 0.6.14-r2.
Works OK for me.

Maybe removing the 2>/dev/null from the end of the transcode command
in the extractthumbnail.sh script  may give some extra clues as to why it is failing.
