I think you are confusing ENcoding with DEcoding.
The backend encodes the video to disk, either using the hardware on a PVR
type card, or using the CPU if your capture card does not have encoding
capabilities.
Decoding is the process of playing the video back out to the display, this
is done by the frontend, whether it is a stand alone box or in the same box
as the backend.
