Just a quick follow-up, this seems to be working for me:

/dev/hdb /media/cdrecorder iso9660,udf pamconsole,rw,exec,noauto,user 0 0

The DVD menu now appears as it should, even after a reboot.

Note that as I was messing around today I switched dvd drives from DVD-ROM
to a DVD-ROM/CD-RW. Not sure if that had any effect or not...
