The last thing I read about SATA drives said that DMA is always enabled.
On the few Linux boxes I've built with SATA drives, it hasn't been an
issue.

Having said that, hdparm is actually for IDE drives only. On all the
boxes I've built, the SATA drives show up using SCSI nomenclature
(/dev/sda, etc.) Although you can query and test /dev/sdx drives with
hdparm, you're not supposed to be able to set parameters.

Does your motherboard have some sort of IDE emulation for the SATA
drives? You might try turning that off and going with a native SATA
interface. If your OS is installed on the SATA drive, this will involve
using a rescue disk as the drive designation will change.

Hope this helps.
