Re-read (or just plain read? ;) the comment...  I.e. "Uncomment the 
appropriate *four* lines below (only one slave.pcm line)," (emphasis added).

No configuration required for xine/MPlayer (or any other app).  That's 
the whole purpose of defining the default...
