Have you tried just installin the nvidia drivers the old fashioned way, 
i.e download them from the nvidia site?
I've only ever done them that way and never had any probs..
You can even get it to compile a custome installation file for your 
current kernel so if you need to reinstall at some point it saves a lot 
of time..
