thanks for the feeback!

I did not try irxevent, since I was under the impression that the atrpms 
were built with native lirc support (at least my i386 download works 
fine with native lirc)

After linking ~/.mythtv/lircrc to ~/.lircrc and adding some mappings for 
irxevent, all is working now

I guess this means the x86_64 compile does not support lirc natively.
Next learing curve: compile from source!
