Chad,

Does the output of glxinfo or your X.org.log mention any OpenGL
related problems? I'd suggest trying to keep all variables constant
and changing only one at at time to see its effect on the system.
Running 800x600 at 32bit should be OK. I suppose their could be a problem
with your OpenGL libraries if ldconfig stopped things from working.

Also, you could post your xorg.conf in case fellow NV users spot
something amiss in it.

Can't offer much else, but recognise the pain.
