You need to add an extra line to your modprobe.conf if you are using ivtv.
The last one (as listed below) did it for me when I had this issue...

# ivtv modules setup
alias char-major-81 videodev
alias char-major-81-0 ivtv
alias tveeprom tveeprom-ivtv
alias msp3400 msp3400-ivtv
