Easier to do a detect on network connection, check the essid of the wiFI
point, and hit the server if it's considered "local".

Rsync works well, I agree.  Though the idea of having a service
"listening" for the car didn't occur to me, I'd probably have the car pc
handle the connectivity, rather than having the home server trying to
connect to anything and everything in its sights :).
