Gentoo here too, been using Linux since '98 and used RH/Mandrake/FC and 
even Suse for a bit all of which had issues with package updates and 
dependancy hell.  I realize things have gotten a lot better in  the last 
year with FC2 and 3, but Gentoo "Just Works" and allows for a great 
amount of flexability without a huge amount of work, even pretty GUIs if 
you want (need) them :).  Plus you don't need to conform to someone 
else's idea of what a Server/Workstation is, though a bit OT I would 
like to be able to install Gnome w/o all the Gnome extras
