[mythtv-users] ATI IGP 9100, GUI speed, and 2D vs 3D acceleration

I recently built a remote frontend so I could relegate my mythbackend to
the basement. My board is a Soyo board using an ATI IGP 9100 chipset
and I have a VGA->NTSC converter that drives my rear projection TV.
When the frontend/backend combo was in use, the GUI was very responsive
even on the "lowly" Voodoo 5 I had in that machine. I'm noticing now on
the remote frontend that, specifically in the Watch Recordings screen,
there is noticable painting going on. I notice this most when going in
and out of the pop-up menu.

I'm currently using RedHat 9, 2.4 kernel from ATRPMS, XFree86 4.3.0 and
the ATI proprietary drivers which provide only 2D acceleration.

My question is, does MythTV benefit from the 3D acceleration that I
would get from moving to the DRI drivers from dri.sourceforge.net for my
card which do provide 3D acceleration (I don't need the TV-out that the
ATI drivers provide). And if so, is there a build of such drivers for
4.3.0 on the 2.4 kernel or do I have to move to x.org which could
introduce issues into my otherwise well running system.

Thanks in advance,
Kevin
