I don't bother with streaming and just access the files from Windows via 
a Samba share. Once you install DSMyth, the show titles show up along 
the .nuv filenames in the Windows Explorer window, so it's easy to tell 
which one is which.

It is also possible to set up Mythweb so when you click on a show in the 
"Recorded Programs" tab it will start your player with the Samba 
filename instead of an http stream (see comments in conf.php).

As far as players go, I have the best luck with VLC 
(http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html). It seems to play 
everything.
