[mythtv-users] stopping screen going black

Most likely the screensaver is kicking in.

Try adding these lines to your /etc/rc.d/rc.local file
(assuming that your X server is running by the time
rc.local is being executed):
/usr/X11R6/bin/xset -dpms
/usr/X11R6/bin/xset s off

If you're running KDE as your desktop environment, you
might also have to disable the screensaver within it
as well.
