How big is the file you are working with?  IIRC, I had a similar error 
when I was using a version of lvemux that wasn't compilied with large 
file support (> 2GB).  I got the source and compiled it with "gcc 
-D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64" and that solved my problem.
