$20-30 you quote, it is a difficult prospect at best. You could easily
forgo hard disks by going with a network booting system and while
multiple frontends per box is doable, the problem then shifts to IR
control from multiple sources. All in all, it is a losing proposition...
However, there is an intersting project, MythRoku built on the Roku HD
Photobridge devices. While not cheap ($200) for a basic frontend
compared to a MediaMVP, it is very very cheap considering that it does
HD playback.

I don't think you're going to find an answer given the cost restrictions
you have placed on the frontend, but there is a variety of options for
you if you are willing to meet the cost requirements and Myth is
certainly flexible enough to handle the implementation.
