No reason that separate backends cannot have different lineups. We do it
all the time with different cards. Everything would be controlled from the
master backend. One of them would be a slave backend. The master would
hold the database.
I think the problem would be the storage of the programs recorded by the
slave machine. AIUI, all recordings are made to one folder. So this might
only work, if you had a third machine which was the storage site for all
of the backends. But you may have severe latency problems with a remote
box. I don't think the backend/database can deal with separate stores for
individual backends.

Then again having one storage box could be quite efficient if you could
get over the remote storage aspect.
