I'm just guessing here, but does the user who starts your backend
process have write permissions to the direcotry where your recordings
go? I had some really wierd things happen when the permissions
weren't right. My problems were actually with live tv which can be
setup to a different location from the recordings, it sounds a lot
like what you are seeing.
