Did you start lircd before running irw?

Sorry about tardy reply, I'm snowed-under here.

Yes. I tried to start lircd, but that results in the following appearing
in the lirc log:

Aug 23 11:52:32 Mythbox lircd 0.7.2: lircd(bw6130) ready
Aug 23 11:52:35 Mythbox lircd 0.7.2: accepted new client on /dev/lircd
Aug 23 11:52:35 Mythbox lircd 0.7.2: initializing '/dev/usb/hid/hiddev0'
Aug 23 11:52:35 Mythbox lircd 0.7.2: unable to open
'/dev/usb/hid/hiddev0' Aug 23 11:52:35 Mythbox lircd 0.7.2: caught
signal

/dev/usb/hid/ doesn't exist, but there is a hiddev0 node in /dev/usb/
Changing the device references in hardware.conf to point to that result
in the same log messages with the new path.

I can't help feeling there's something very basic I'm missing here :-)

Cheers

Marius
