hmm... unfortunately I don't have that here (fedora core 3). I wonder
how I'd get lircd to log to a file. Maybe the output that you have in
/var/log/lircd is going to /var/log/messages on fedora?

Ok, this I tried, but unfortunately it didn't reveal anything
interesting. I've included the output below:

[root at homeserver mythtv]# /etc/init.d/lircd stop
Stopping infrared remote control daemon: OK ]
[root at homeserver mythtv]# /usr/sbin/lircd -n
lircd-0.7.2[4521]: lircd(any) ready
lircd-0.7.2[4521]: accepted new client on /dev/lircd
lircd-0.7.2[4521]: removed client
lircd-0.7.2[4521]: accepted new client on /dev/lircd
lircd-0.7.2[4521]: removed client

This was after a cold reboot, so irw worked (again for only one button
press). I've included the output from the window where I ran irw:

[root at homeserver mythtv]# irw
00000000000017a1 00 Ch- Hauppauge_350

[root at homeserver mythtv]# irw

[root at homeserver mythtv]#

I'm open to any ideas or suggestions, I'm stumped... :-(
cheers,
