This is not a case of "downloading updates every night"...  you have a 
newer box (like the dual-tuner receivers that they gave me) that has a 
screensaver mode (comes up after like 4 hours of inactivity).  AFAIK, 
there is no way to turn this off.

however, if you're using the lirc blaster stuff from 
http://losdos.dyndns.org:8080/public/mythtv-info/MythTV_DISH_IR_LED_TX_via_Modified_LIRC.html 
you can just modify dish_chan.sh to send SELECT.  Any good remote 
definition for the dish receivers should have the select button's code 
defined...
