If you don't have an NVIDIA card, ignore...

If you're using the NVIDIA proprietary drivers, the use of bootsplash is 
not supported.  NVIDIA doesn't provide a framebuffer driver for use with 
the console, and their X driver assumes there is no framebuffer running 
on the card.  You would probably get exactly the behavior you describe 
if you tried using bootsplash and NVIDIA's drivers...

It doesn't last as long, but you can successfully use a GRUB splash 
screen with the NVIDIA cards (i.e. once GRUB starts Linux, Linux sets up 
a regular text-based console, so no framebuffers are in use).
