You're not going to like it... But the "proper" way to compensate for
this overscan is to have the TV adjusted. TVs today, especially HDTVs,
are horribly overscanned as they arrive from the factory. I'm not
entirely sure why, but the overscan on HDTV inputs is usually turned up
WAY beyond what they normally do even for standard TV inputs.

I hired a tech to come adjust the inputs of my Pioneer CRT-based RPTV
and dial it back. We took probably 10-12% overscan out of the box and
the resulting picture works great. I can actually see the score during
football games -- something that was impossible before. Some
compromise was necessary as perfect linearity was impossible to
maintain all the way to the edges of the picture. I'd think this is
only a problem with CRT-based sets, however.

I advise people getting new HDTV sets to make the seller adjust the set
as a condition of the sale. I haven't seen one single HDTV set
adjusted properly as delivered from the factory. I'm really surprised
that the new technology sets like LCD and DLP are just as overscanned
as the old CRT based RPTV sets. But they seem to be.
