Yes. Just trying to keep it brief.

If it's a known problem with nvidia cards or if there's a more proper
method of debugging such a freeze since I do not have a second box to
monitor syslog output via tty.

This is a hard freeze and I'm getting absolutely little to no debugging
output except a little strace output that is not easily copy/pasted due
to a hard freeze condition.

However, your pasted link here might provide a clue.

Hardware known NOT to work and other issues
      * Hauppauge WinTV-D or -HD (no driver)
      * Hauppauge WinTV-USB series
      * Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-usb (model 602), or WinTV-PVR-PCI (model
        880) cards (no driver - this is not the PVR-250/350 series of
        cards supported by the IvyTV driver)
      * Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-USB2 (driver available at
        http://justiceforall.free.fr/pvrusb2.html, no MythTV support)

I have a Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-USB2 and am using the newer incarnation of
the driver found at:
http://www.isely.net/pvrusb2-utils.html

This driver provides a /dev/v4l/video0 device and it streams an MPEG2
stream (video & audio). Simply doing "cat /dev/v4l/video0" provides
output. A 2-6 second delay is required while the driver initializes the
pvrusb2 device before cat starts displaying a stream of output.

To me, this appears more of a cpu run / total display freeze.

I am using Gentoo Dist. Ebuild appears well maintained and seems to do
quite a bit of error checking to prevent a faulty configure script from
executing.
