[mythtv-users] MTD can't see DVD drive

I've been having problems getting mythDVD to work.  Looking through the
archives, I've seen posts that indicate my mtd daemon can't see the dvd 
drive.

On the ripping screen, I just get

No Jobs / Waiting for DVD.

The console for mtd says this:

A socket has been opened
A socket has been closed

...

And so on.

I know that is not the right output for mtd, but
I don't know enough to fix it.  Is there a setting
I can change somewhere?

DVD playing works fine through mplayer. 
my dvd drive is recognized no problem from
myth and mythdvd for playing.

Any ideas?
