Thanks, I'll take a look at this, so do I just put...

xset +dpms dpms 1 1 1 

... into my rc.local file?  I'm not exactly sure how xset works, do
command that you issue to it get applied immediately?  I would assume
this would have to be done as root, since I need it to power off the
login screen.
