Another data point: if the frontend is already running, the
backend segfaults consistently about 4-5 seconds after that
last line appears in the log.  If I kill the frontend, then
start the backend by hand, then start the frontend again, it
seems to be OK.

I tried putting a delay of 30 seonds in the front-end startup
script to give the backend time to get happy, but that didn't
work.  I'm going to try increasing the delay next.
