If you have an AC3 decoder on your system, it will be used to decode the 
stream (what your receiver normally does) to output via your soundcard's 
analog connections (2, 4, or 5.1 channels depending on your sound 
card/sound card configuration).  I would guess that your machine has an 
AC3 decoder on it if it has a DVD-playback support on it.
