Thanks for the help. This does in fact get me farther,
but I wouldn't say all is good at this stage.

I use dtvsignal to set to a local HD station, then
start mythbackend. Mythfrontend now connects and
displays a picture.

however:
1) attempting to change channel to a NTSC station
doesn't work. The backend logs the following
and returns to the previous station.

Channel:SetFormat: v4l2 fmt = |NTSC| videomode = 3000
2004-10-31 13:51:57 Maximum signal strength detected: 13% after 5500
msec wait
Channel:SetFormat: v4l2 fmt = |ATSC| videomode = 1000000
2004-10-31 13:51:59 Maximum signal strength detected: 67% after 1500
msec wait
Channel:SetFormat: v4l2 fmt = |NTSC| videomode = 3000

Myth shouldn't care about the signal strength of NTSC .. indeed, it
isn't measurable. So it still seems as if there is some confusion
about which card (and therefore driver) to use when.

2) Recording from HDTV seems to switch to an impossible channel
   (1006!), not the channel deisred.
