I think i'm getting closer.  The problem actually didn't happen on the
last recording (which I mentioned above), but it's now commercial
flagging and is taking up almost the entire 512MB (and almost no CPU). 
If it were to start recording another show now it would almost certainly
hit the swap.  That would also explain why it happens a minute or so
after a show starts recording as I don't believe it starts flagging
previous show the instant it ends.

So ... solutions ... turn off swap ... what will happen then?  It won't
go to the hd obviously, but will that cause other problems as the
commercial flagging is taking up so much memory?  Is there a way to
limit how much memory the commercial flagging takes?

It's also possible to run the flagging process on another machine now
isn't it?  Can I run a slave backend on a machine without a capture card
and use that for flagging only?
