More on the delayed audio. Today I did another
dist-upgrade which brought in a new version of
libfame:

There is no longer the "system too slow error" shown
above. The delay is greatly improved, but still quite
noticeable. The delay goes from approximately 1,500
msec to approximately 50 msec after the libfame
upgrade.
