The backend usually died silently. I didn't have debugging enabled. When I ran 
"mythbackend -d" from a terminal it would die within minutes unless I stopped 
commercial flagging as soon as possible after it started up on the most 
recently recorded programs. After disabling commercial flagging completely, 
it hasn't crashed even once in about 3 weeks.

Yes, I know I could be more helpful. I'm not complaining, just confirming that 
I have similar symptoms. I haven't had the time to dig into the issue and 
apologize for that.

btw, my box is a RedHat 9 running MythTV 0.16 release built from source and 
acting as both frontend and backend with 3 PVR-250MCE cards.
