I've heard this effect on my laptop too.  I guess it depends on how 
sensitive you are to it.  However, one way you could fix this is switch 
to an external audio system like USB audio.  This would move the sound 
card outside of the confines of the PC and away from the noise.  I use 
them all the time and they are quite well supported under ALSA.

Try the iMic from griffin.  It's about 30USD.
