Again am a newbie, but I assume you mean
mythfrondend->setup/utilities->setup->general->audio out
I don't have an "ALSA:front" as a choice. Only chioces are:
/dev/dsp
/dev/dsp0
/dev/dsp1
/dev/dsp2
/dev/dsp3
/dev/adsp
/dev/adsp0
/dev/adsp1
/dev/adsp2
/dev/adsp3
Also, mixer doesn't have a "default" as an option.
I'm beginning to think that it's not a sound card problem. I tried
disabling my sound card in bios and I still get the ringbuffer error. Like
I said before the first time I watch tv after a reboot all is fine, but
after that the buffer error occurs. Even if the first time after I reboot I
use "cat /dev/video0 > test.mpg" I get the buffer errors if I try to watch
tv with mythtv.

Once you toggled the audio to ALSA did you remember to set the audio
device in myth as well (audio device should be "ALSA:front" and the mixer
should be "default") ?

I installed the newest version of alsa 1.0.7, installed mythtv from CVS,
and set the pci latency to 0x40. Now I get prompted with "CONTINUE WITHOUT
AUDIO!" every time I select "Watch TV" and I still get the ringbuffer error
message.

I can only speak as to point 1.
The prebuffering pauses are probably not due to the capture card but
rather to the audio device, or so mine were on a Pundit-R which also has an
asus mobo and uses the atiixp audio driver. The solution was to compile
mythtv from CVS and toggle the audio support from OSS to ALSA. I have had to
set the latency_delay for the pci cards as well.

Subject [mythtv-users] Hauppauge PVR-250 difficulties
I am a Newbie to Linux. I am currently running the default install of
Mandrake 9.1. I installed mythtv from the HOWTO as well as the PVR-250 as
detailed in the "example configurations". My setup uses a celeron P4
1.8GHz, 384Mb PC2100 RAM, and ASUS P4VP-MX motherboard (I am using all the
onboard VIA devices: video, sound, ethernet). The Hauppauge card I am
using
is a PVR-250 model 980 NTSC/NTSC-J. I am experiencing two difficulties
with
watching TV.
1) The first time I start mythfrontend after a reboot everything works ok.
However, if I stop watching tv and then attempt to watch tv again the
signal
becomes choppy and eventually locks up. If I switch over to the terminal
window in which I started mythfrontend I see the message "prebuffering
pause" then "waited 2 seconds for data to become available, waiting
again..". The only way to regain use of the tuner is to reboot the
computer. I tried stopping the ivtv module (and all its dependencies) and
restarting it again without rebooting the computer, but that had no
effect.
I also updated the firmware to the recommended version from the ivtv site
(from file pvr_1.18.21.22168_inf.zip), this had no effect.
2) When I watch TV all I receive is static. I tried fine tuning the
frequency with no success. How are the frequencies set? I use DataDirect
to set the channel info, but maybe I missed a step that sets the channel
frequencies.
I would appreciate any help on these topics
Thanks,
Dan
