This is typical behavior if you're not capturing on the right input.

Try other inputs, sounds like you just don't have the right one selected. 
There are multiple "SVideo" inputs, according to ivtv, despite only the one 
on the back of the card. Try the other ones. (Look at the output of ivtvctl 
-a).

Here's a snippet from my 350, which has only one physical SVideo input, but 
four that show in the output below:
