I can't answer for Douglas, but in my case I do the same thing.  The 
built in transcoding is hit-and-miss for HDTV content.  I use ProjectX 
to convert my files from MPEG-TS to MPEG-EP then use transcode to 
convert to Xvid.  Seems to be working well so far (slow, but well).
