The docs on mythtv.org and in the cvs are a help.  My suggestion is this:

If you compiled and installed mythtv-0.14 keep that folder around so 
that you can reinstall it if necessary (same goes with install with rpms)

Then backup your sql database with the instructions here:
http://mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-21.html#ss21.5

With these two things in place you can freely play around with trying to 
get cvs working without fear of ruining your whole setup.
