No, you can change modes in MythTV (unsure about xine, but I don't think
it would be different).  I'm currently using the Creative DVD remote
which does not have seperate navigate and number buttons so I use the
SHIFT button to switch between a "navigate mode" for moving around menus
and a "number mode" to enter numbers.
