Thanks for the help.  I have tried all the inputs, 0-5.  Like I said, only
4 gives anything but a blank picture and according to test_ioctl
--list-inputs 4 corresponds to tuner 0.  I would interpret that as the
coax input.  That is what I am using, straight from Comcast's cable box. 
I also have composite from the cable box going to a receiver and that is
working fine.  I have unplugged the composite to make sure it is not
keeping the coax signal from working, and there is no difference.
