I'll answer my own question in case it helps others.  MythTV (or perhaps
it's QT's fault) seems not to use libxft for fonts, but rather the X
font server or fontpaths in XF86Config-4.  I just had to run 'ttmkfdir .
&& mkfontdir' in /usr/share/fonts/truetype and restart X.

I would still like to know what the deal is with DPI.
