| Most mod chips allow you to turn them off, but if you changed the
| hard drive you will still get banned.

| How smooth is your video. I'm using mpeg2 from a pvr-250 and while
| my xbox frontend is pleny watchable, when I have scrolling text
| it's not PERFECTLY smooth.

I've only dealt with two (soon to be three) different mod chips: the
Matrix, the Chameleon, and (soon) the Xenium. The Matrix didn't have
an 'off switch' that I can recall, but I could be mistaken (I haven't
used that chip in a _long_ time). I used Xbox Live with my chameleon
chip turned off and did not get banned (8 months or so). It was my
bad luck that I borrowed Project Gotham2 from a friend and popped it
in without turning off the Chameleon. Apparently some of the new
games (including PG2) automatically connect to XBLive without a
confirmation prompt. I dove for the power button, but didn't get to
it in time. I was banned from XBLive.
I'm sure there are several discussions of XBLive banning (I've read
quite a few of them). I'd suggest any interested parties look over at
http://www.xbox-scene.com in the forums for ideas of what gets you banned.
I only use my xbox to view recordings I've made (PVR-250/Leadtek WinTV
2000 Deluxe). I can't think of anything I've recorded that has
scrolling text, so I don't have an answer for you on that. The video
in general is just fine (same results as my laptop frontend 1.4Ghz
Pentium-M/ 1Gig RAM) on all recordings as well as testing Live TV.
