This is a very subjective topic.  Maybe not worth it to you, but
I'm pretty happy with mine (Pioneer DVR-A06U I bought a while back).

I've had good success with my DVD-R recordings.  My panasonic
DVD player also works well with DVD-RW.

IIRC, this format is fairly compatible for many newer set top DVD players.
I've played my DVDs on family and friend's players without any trouble
so far.
