[mythtv-users] xmame with mythgame

I'm trying to get mythgame working with xmame.

Setup:
Gentoo with 2.6 kernel
alsa-lib-1.0.2 (1.0.3 causes xmame to crash with an assert)
Athlon XP 2500+ processor
nVidia Geforce4 440MX SE graphics card
nVidia 4363 driver patched for 2.6
xmame-0.71.1
no window manager
640x480 default screen resolution

When I compile xmame, it installs several versions:
xmame.SDL
xmame.x11
xmame.xgl

Which one should give me the best performance with my setup?

As it stands now, both the .x11 and .xgl versions run, but neither is
perfect.  The .x11 won't run fullscreen, and .xgl is at perhaps 20% of
real speed.  Also, mame doesn't seem to be getting any input from my
keyboard (I don't have a joystick yet).

Suggestions?
