With standard bttv-based cards, though, this could easily be a side effect
of a misconfigured sound card ... it is almost the default behavior of a
card using OSS that has not has its setting customized. But even here, as
Andrew says, we need more information.

First, are we talking about a system with 1 or 2 vidcap cards? (That is,
does "watch a show" mean "watch Live TV" or "play a recording of a
previously-taped show"?)

Second, does the system have 1 or 2 sound cards? If 2, how are they set up
(what is jumpered to what, and what device entries do they use)?

Third, what are the hardware specifics (vidcap and sound)?

Fourth, are you using ALSA or OSS sound modules?

Fifth, what sound source do you have set as the capture source in alsamixer
or rexima (or whatever mixer app you use)?

Focus on the last question first. If you are playing back a show on a
1-bttv-capcard system ... my best guess about what you have ... your
problem is almost surely a misconfigured sound card.
