Nothing fancy in .asoundrc, and the card is a SoundBlaster Audigy. 
Works like a charm, passing raw ac3 to my amp, falling back to pcm when 
there is no ac3 (from the -ac3 hwac3, switch, the ',' being key for 
fall-back).

$ cat ~/.asoundrc
  pcm.emu10k1 {
  type hw
  card 0
  }

  ctl.emu10k1 {
  type hw
  card 0
  }
